At the Frankfurt Motor show in 1963, a certain high quality German car manufacturer showcased their latest project title 901 (this was its designated internal production number). The French vehicle manufacturer Peugeot vigorously protested as they had trademarked all car names or model numbers that consisted of three numbers with a zero in the centre. After much continuation, production was started late in 1963 by Porsche. The 911 was unleashed on the world in 1964. The first model was as a replacement, plus a more powerful, more comfortable replacement for the 356 which was the first production car assembled by Porsche and was basically a sport version of the timeless classic, Volkswagen Beetle. It was an overnight success and became the flagship model for the German manufacturer Porsche. You can actually trace its origins back to the Porsche 356.
Porsche had decided to build a four seater sports car that would be larger than the current model. At this point, there were no intentions of replacing one with the other. It was during the design process that Ferry Porsche realised that if he where to have a four seater, he would be in direct competition with established car makers in that class like Mercedes Benz and Ford to mention just a couple, which would probably end up stretching the smaller companies budgets to the point of company extinction. The smaller version however, could now be designed to be much more luxurious than its predecessor and although it kept some of the Porsche 356's charm and characteristics, it was being designed to a more modern and up to date look and feel, and, whether intentionally or not, be more aerodynamic. The interior was designed to give a little more space and the upgraded six cylinder engine gave it more power, a higher top speed and a quicker 0 to 60 mph (0 to 100kph). All in all a classier faster more modern sports car. The design team and engineers, in our humble opinion where light years ahead of their time.
