Harold E. LeMay amassed the largest privately owned collection of automobiles, motorcycles, trucks, other vehicles and related memorabilia in the world. At its peak, the LeMay Collection numbered in excess of 3,000 vehicles and thousands of artifacts. The Collection, recognized by many as a national treasure, represents the American experience with the automobile as it spans the 20th century and features virtually every American make as well as numerous foreign cars.

Harold and his wife Nancy intuitively knew the power of the Collection through the experiences they shared with family and friends at car shows and swap meets across the nation. They glimpsed its power through hearing the stories it elicited from the thousands of people drawn to their Annual Car Show at the LeMay homestead, an event which has been held each August for the last quarter of a century. The LeMay Collection is listed in the Guinness Book of World Records as the largest privately owned collection in the world; impressive if accomplished by a king, but jaw dropping, awesome when accomplished by a local businessman from Tacoma, Washington.

Harold LeMay was born in Yakima, Washington on September 4, 1919. Harold graduated from Kapowsin High School in 1937 and purchased his first garbage route in the early 1940’s. It was also during this time, from 1944-1946 that Harold spent time in the Navy as a Seabee. When Harold took a 1935 Chevy truck off a paying hauling job and put a wooden, hand-cranked dump box on it to haul garbage, everyone laughed. He was already transporting workers to and from the shipyards in Tacoma, but Harold was looking towards the future and wanted to strategically position his business for success. He realized that someday the war would end but “there would always be garbage.” He had good gut instincts about future trends, was hardworking, and had great, common sense. A committed believer in rising early and working until dark, Harold put in long, hard days. But it was his enjoyment of work and delight in people that charged his batteries. Under Harold’s direction, his businesses grew to serve more than 125,000 customers and employ over 450 people. Harold’s holdings include many refuse companies and recycling businesses spanning from Mount Rainer to the Pacific Ocean, two major landfills, Lucky Sales, Lucky Towing, and Harold LeMay Investments. One of Harold’s most interesting properties is the former Marymount Military Academy located in Spanaway, Washington and purchased by Harold in the 1980’s.
