2003 is the RAA’s Centenary year, when South Australia’s largest independent organisation celebrates its 100th birthday.
This is a momentous milestone; not just for the anniversary itself, but also for the opportunity it presents to relive some of the great spectrum of matters which have helped mould the RAA.
Through its member services – like emergency road service and touring – the Association has become established as a South Australian icon, but it wasn’t always that way. It was unknown to most people in its earliest days, when a handful of pioneer motorists quietly embarked on a social routine of convivial clubroom meetings and weekend drives in the hills…
Here, RAA Historian Stuart Nicol takes a journey back through 100 years of RAA history. Stuart’s book Rebel on Wheels, a definitive history of the RAA, was launched to mark the Association’s Centenary on 30 September, 2003.
