As the First World War drew to a close, at a founders' meeting attended by motoring enthusiasts, the Hong Kong Automobile Association was formed on the 14th June, 1918. From these small beginnings, at an auspicious time in Hong Kong's turbulent history, has grown the diverse organisation that is the modern HKAA.

Initially formed with the object of "enabling motorists to unite together for their common welfare and benefit. Unity is strength and the matters that the Association gives its attention - good roads, proper regulation of traffic, safety measures and anything to do with the general protection of motorists¡K" is as true today as it was in 1918. Over the intervening 84 years the Association has also expanded these basic concepts to include all road users, public and private, as well as taking an active part in the community generally.

Today, as a non-profit making international organisation, the Association has also encompassed the objectives of promoting the improvement of services to that community, especially in the areas of environmental protection and the promotion, and development of, a road safety culture.

From the original services of the 1920's, road traffic patrol with two Austin 7 motor cars and car washing by hand, the Association has in the new millennia an impressive list of members services - 24 hours Free Breakdown & Towing Service, Insurance, Car Inspection, Lubrication, Evaluation, Emission Tests, Shipping, Driving Tours, Motorsports, Car Courses, Car Finance and Accessory Shop.

Additionally the Association represents Hong Kong to the International motoring bodies. The Association has been a full member of the Alliance Internationale de Tourisme (AIT) since 1930 and has aided the AIT in its work on such diverse subjects as drink-driving and road management. The Association was elected full member of the Federation International de l'Automobile (FIA) in 1978 and the Federation Internationale de Motocyclisme (FIM) in 1979.

The launch of a website will reinforce the proactive relationship with Automobile Associations worldwide. Through the cyber channel, updated information in association with motoring features will be made available to members and motorists worldwide, forming an integrated communication system heading towards the millennium.
