Low cost Automation development project for Automobile Industry

Chennai: A consortium has been formed by IIT Chennai, IIT Mumbai, TVS Motors, Mahindra & Mahindra, Sona Koyo, TVS Lucas, Mico, Systemantics India and Magtorq to develop flexible low cost automation for the Indian Automobile Industry.
With a fund allocation of Rs.5.57 Crores the project is intended to produce highly reliable, high performance application specific Robots for the Automobile Industry. Central Government is likely to give a grant of Rs.5.04 Crores to this project. Members of the consortium would contribute Rs.52.5 Lakhs.
At the inaugural meeting of the members in Chennai(Thursday, Nov 01, 2007) the representatives signed an agreement in the presence of Mr.T.Ramasami, Secretary, Department of Science and Technology (DST).
According to M.S. Ananth, Director, IIT-Madras, IIT-M would play a major role in the development of technology for the project. Indian Institute of Technology Madras will establish a centre of excellence for calibration and validation of the robots. Modeling, simulation, control algorithms and validation of robots would be done by Indian Institute of Technology Bombay. Light weight speed reducers will be developed and supplied by Magtorq. 10 robots will designed, developed and supplied by Systemantics India. The auto industries in the consortium will test 2 robotic arms in industrial shop floor for 10 applications.
T.T. Narendran, Dean, Industrial Consultancy & Sponsored Research, IIT-M said that more than 95 per cent of the research project had been completed ahead of schedule by the institute. He hopes that the consortia members will also stick to the schedule. Targeting ten packages in 3 configurations the project is to be completed in 12 months.
These low cost Robots are supposed to reduce the cost of production in the automobile Industry with the required flexibility to make them more competitive in the international market. Based on payload, precision and speed, the currently available imported models cost between Rs. 8 lakh and Rs.20 lakh.
According to Mr.Ramasamy this project would produce highly reliable, high performance robots which are application specific. The consortium will bring together Indian auto industry and academia in research.
With Automobile production going up and more companies being set up in and around Chennai this initiative is supposed to further contribute to the growth of the Indian Auto Industry.

Also, the Automobile industry has strong backward and forward linkages and hence provides employment to a large section of the population. Thus the role of Automobile Industry cannot be overlooked in Indian Economy. All kinds of vehicles are produced by the Automobile Industry. India Automobile Industry includes the manufacture of trucks, buses, passenger cars, defense vehicles, two-wheelers, etc. The industry can be broadly divided into theCar manufacturing , two-wheeler manufacturing and heavy vehicle manufacturing units.
