Japan Automakers' U.S. Market Share Down
2nd November, 2007

Japanese automakers' combined share of the U.S. new vehicle market stood at 36.6 pct in October, down 1.2 percentage point from the previous month, Autodata Corp. statistics showed Thursday.

New vehicle sales by Japanese industry leader Toyota Motor Corp. <7203> increased 0.5 pct from a year before to 197,592 units, a record high for October, posting the first growth in four months.

Mainly behind the increase was a 44.9 pct jump in sales of the Prius hybrid car, which continued to draw strong demand amid rising gasoline prices. In addition, sales rose 1.7-fold for the Tundra pickup truck.

Nissan Motor Co. saw its sales increase 8.8 pct to 84,947 units thanks mainly to a 41.9 pct rise in sales of the Altima sedan.

Honda Motor Co.'s sales dipped 0.2 pct to 114,799 units.

The combined market share of the Big Three U.S. automakers--General Motors Corp., Ford Motor Co. and Chrysler LLC--came to 51.3 pct in October, up 0.5 point from the previous month, Autodata said.

Overall new vehicle sales in the U.S. market last month declined 2.7 pct from a year before to 1,231,575 units, affected by rising gasoline prices, it said.
