Isetta
The
Isetta microcar was first designed and built in Italy by Iso SpA in
the 1950s. Iso SpA was a manufacturer of scooters and refridgeraters,
which in some ways influenced the design of the tiny automobile, which
also had an engine from a scooter in it.
Iso SpA licensed the design of the Isetta out to countries around
the world. Among the countries were Iso Isetta of Italy, VELAM Isetta
of France, Romi-Isetta of Brazil, and BMW Isetta of Germany.
Over the years the Isetta microcar received nicknames like the bubble
car, the rolling egg, coffin on wheels, and little egg.
The BMW Isetta was BMW-ized with a new BMW engine, some alterations
to the Isetta design, and some engineering tweeks. The first BMW Isetta
microcar was made in 1955 and the last Isetta model by BMW was made
in 1962.
In 2007 and 2008 there has been speculation that BMW will be releasing
a new Isetta model microcar.
BMW Isetta models include the BMW Isetta 250, BMW Isetta 300, and
the BMW Isetta 600, which influenced the more modern design of the
BMW 700 and the death of the BMW Isetta brand.
